Museums and galleries

Head back in time at the Wainuiomata Museum to experience classrooms of old. Situated at Wainuiomata School, one room has been retained as a period classroom and the other holds historic articles on life in the Wainuiomata Valley. Entry by gold coin donation.

Visit the Petone Settlers Museum to get a glimpse of what Petone looked like when the first settlers arrived. Grab a fluffly (and a flat white) from the coffee cart on Petone foreshore and collect some shells. Wed–Sun, 10am-4pm Petone Esplanade.

Hetet Art Space Waiwhetu, has some very special Māori treasures, both traditional and modern, including weaving, carving and art.  There's a cafe next door. 58 Guthrie Street, Waiwhetu

The Dowse Art Museum is very child friendly and has fun, interactive art work plus a lounge area for kids to play and create things and there's a cafe on the premises. 10am-7pm 7 days, 45 Laings Road, Lower Hutt.

The Alfred Memelink Artspace is a purpose-built Artspace, located on the Eastern side of the Petone, at 223 The Esplanade. More than just a gallery, the Artspace will also aim to support the local art community.

Expressions Gallery showcases a stunning array of artwork from the Upper Hutt region. There is a cafe too.

And for another slice of the past visit Golders Cottage for a window into life in the 1870-1940’s. There's children’s toys, gardens, household furniture and workshop implements in a Victorian setting. Open Saturday 1.30pm-4pm. 707 Fergusson Drive, Upper Hutt. Phone 04 528 9855.
