Support for Hutt Valley parents and caregivers


Plunket is a fabulous support service, offering clinics, family centres, parent education, parent groups, play groups, toy libraries and car seat hire.

PlunketLine is a free 24 hours a day telephone advice service for parents. Call PlunketLine on 0800 933 922 day or night.

Plunket runs a range of groups for parents/caregivers and their children to meet other parents and share information. They offer walking groups, whanau groups, young mums groups, coffee groups, dance and movement, and Plunket in neighbourhood groups (PIN).

Barnardos  - a local resource

Barnardos offers a variety of services to Hutt Valley families with young children: early childhood centres, counselling, children supervised contact, homebased family support, Kidstart family day care, domestic violence programmes. See their website.

Whanau In Armz free fruit and vegetables programme

The Wainuiomata Community Centre is supporting local families by distributing fruit and vegetables. Just bring in a box to the centre before 10am any Tuesday. Or contact the centre to find out how you can donate.

Multiple support needed?

Strengthening Families is a free service that helps to bring together all the agencies and people who can help your family with a variety of needs. It can be particularly helpful when more than one support service is required. Parent 2 Parent run a Lower Hutt coffee group where you can meet other parents of children with disabilities and health impairments.

Wellington early intervention trust
also known as WEIT, is a therapy based service for pre-school children with special needs that include physical, intellectual or behavioural. WEIT are located at 79a Copeland Street, Lower Hutt. Or for more information email weit@xtra.co.nz.

Autism New Zealand Monthly Meet-Ups, offers two meet ups each month. This will be a time to pop in to meet people, get information, ask questions, or just have a hot drink with people who understand. One session will be a lunch time and the other just after work. If these times don’t work, you can ring and make an appointment for a one-on-one conversation. These meet-ups will be held instead of the OASIS and the Lower Hutt Support Group which were previously were held in the CBD and Waterloo, Lower Hutt respectively. Conductive Education is located at the Naenae primary school grounds, Waddington Drive, Naenae. Where physical, play, and early childhood learning is combined. Conductive Education is a unique form of special education and rehabilitation, beneficial to children with motor disorders. For more information email conductive@naenae-primary.school.nz.

Local Area Coordination works alongside disabled people (from 0-65 years of age) and their whānau to identify and build on their vision for a good life. They also work to strengthen everyday connections within the community. Local area Coordination come to the families and work alongside them to take the steps to build a natural support network. Conversely they work with the community to enable those supports to be found and strengthened. This is a free service provided by Local Area Coordination. Caring4OurKids A group of parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and a few comorbid diseases such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia.

WellMe is the Wellington Region Support Group for those with Myalgic Encephalopathy (ME) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). WellMe offers support and advice to young persons (their parents, caregivers and whanau) experiencing ME/CFS. CFS is the main over-arching symptom of many conditions.

WellMe's Lower Hutt Support Group meets on the second Tuesday of every month (except January), 1pm - 3pm,
Room 1, Russell Keown House (formerly Apex House), Corner of Queens Drive and Laings Road, Lower Hutt.

Naenae breakfast club

Come along for a (free) healthy breakfast every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning between 7:30am - 8:30am at the Naenae Community Hall, supper hall. All school-aged students aged 5-18 are welcome, and parents are also invited to share a free tea or coffee.
