Premier playgrounds in Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt

The Hutt Valley boasts 3 fantastic premier playgrounds that will excite and challenge your whole family. There's Avalon Park in Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt has the award winning Maidstone "max" playground and Harcourt Park.  Pack a picnic and enjoy the day!  


Avalon Park and playground, Lower Hutt

Avalon Park, Fairway Drive, Taita
Lower Hutt's biggest and best playground, Avalon Park has got everything from a lagoon with ducks, a pétanque court, Lions Club mini putt and heaps of space for the kids to run or ride around.  Oh, there's several playgrounds too!

If your kids are into riding on model trains then Avalon's miniature trains are a fun way to tour around the park - you get to go through tunnels! (operates weekends and public holiday,charges apply)

There's a fenced playground for pre-school kids and an older children's playground with more advanced play. Plus there's a skate ramp located near Fairway Drive. 

If you head down to the northern end of the park there is a beginners bicycle area replete with mini-roads, intersections and road signs for kids to practise safe riding. With the Hutt river trail running alongside the park its easy to travel to and fro the park on bikes.

Public toilets are located by the playgrounds and an ice cream shop is in the mini putt area (weekends only). Electric barbeques, picnic tables and seating are available.  


Maidstone "max" playground

This is an award winning playground and offers challenging playground adventures for kids of all ages.  There's a 1,000m2 skate park, 60 meter long twin flying fox, tube slide, roctopus, junior playground and one of the highest climbing nets in New Zealand! 

The 1,100km downhill mountain bike track runs through bush and was designed by local riders and the Kennet brothers. Toilets, picnic and barbecue area are available. Make a full day of it by stopping at H20Xtream or Staglands.


Harcourt Park and playground, Upper Hutt

Harcourt Park is a stunning location with the river running along its borders and nestled into the Akatarawa forest. It provided the scenic backdrop for “Isengard” in The Lord of the Rings!

There's a children's playground which suits all ages plus in summer there's a fantastic paddling pool with spray tunnel and sensor-timed sprinklers for preschoolers - loads of fun so bring the togs. Bring your frisbees and try out the disc golf course which has 9 baskets and 18 tees. 

You can mountain bike, swim, take a bush walk and there's picnic facilities with free electric barbecues. 

Harcourt Park has two playgrounds: one for the little children, and another for the older ones


There's also a paddling pool available for the little ones in the summer time
